Review of Excellence Playa Mujeres: An Unforgettable Honeymoon Part 1

After being married for 5 months we finally decided it was time to book a honeymoon.  We booked Excellence Playa Mujeres for 4 nights and 5 days and spent our 6 month anniversary there!  It was the best decision ever!  C isn't a beach guy but I think living in North Dakota had him craving sunshine, sand, and the sea.  He didn't have one complaint and didn't object when I told him we were planning a return trip next year. Here's part one on how we felt about the resort and why we can't wait to go back!

Getting to the Resort: Transportation

We did not book our transfer from the airport through the hotel.  It was pretty expensive and I had found better deals elsewhere.  We ended up booking through USA Transfers.  It was $70 total round trip for them to take us to the resort and back to the airport for our return flight.  We flew into the Cancun Airport and Immigration was horrible.  We waited in line for about 1 hour to get through Immigration.  Customs wasn't as bad.  I'm not sure if this is normal for Cancun or if multiple planes just happened to arrive at the same time.  Once we got through we walked out of the airport to find a very helpful guy holding a USA Transfers Sign.  He showed us to our private van and helped load our luggage.  Our driver was very knowledgeable about the area and we had a great time talking to him about the culture and different tourist attractions.  It took us about 30 minutes to get from the airport to the resort.   On our way home we also had a private Suburban take us back to the airport and we loved our driver as well.  I really liked USA Transfers because it was easy to book online and I believe we got a lot for our money.  Most private vehicles cost $150+.

The Resort

Beautiful doesn't even describe how gorgeous this resort is.  The attention to detail and comfort when planning the design of the pools, landscaping, and buildings were top notch and made for picture perfect scenery where ever you went.  I was in aw of the beauty every single day.  I loved the over the water hammocks.  It was a great place to relax or read a book.  The Grill and Lobster House were situated over the main pool and overlooked the ocean and we looked forward to eating brunch there everyday.  The entertainment at night was pretty good.  We watched the Cirque du Soleil and Fire Shows and both were fantastic.  They had Casino Night and Mexican Night the other nights we were there and we did not participate in those so I cannot comment on them.

Our Room

We booked the 2-Story Rooftop Terrace with Plunge Pool and we were very happy we spent the extra money.  We did not do Excellence Club which meant we did not get a straight ocean view but we stayed in Building 8 and could see the ocean if we peaked out to the right of our balcony and also over the back of our balcony.  The best part about our room location was we could directly see the sunset in the evenings.  It was such a joy to hang out on the balcony and watch the sunset after coming in from the beach.  We did like having the pool but our favorite part was being able to see so far and having a big terrace to relax on in the open air.  As far as the pool goes, we did ask to have it heated in the evenings if we planned on getting in after dark because once the sun went down the water was kinda cold.  On the first story, was the main living area, a small balcony and stairs leading up to your rooftop terrace.  There was a nice closet with lock box and robes.  I lived in the robe and slippers they provided.  The shower was a huge 2 person shower.  We loved it!  There was also a jacuzzi next to the balcony that had doors that opened up to the balcony making it indoor/outdoor.  There was a king bed.  After reading reviews saying the beds were so hard, I asked to have a pillow top mattress topper added before we arrived.  I was comfortable in the bed, and I typically like a soft mattress.  At home we do have pretty firm mattress due to C's bad back, so maybe I have gotten use to it.  There was a fully stocked bar.  C took full advantage of it once the bars closed down at 1:00 am because there was no way he was going to bed "that early" on vacation!  I have a partier on my hands.  We would definitely book this room again.

Excellence Club vs Non-Excellence Club

Like I said we booked Non-Excellence Club.  We do not regret this decision at all.  We did not feel like we missed out on anything because we were not EC.  There was an EC pool and EC exclusive part of the beach.  Neither were any better than the main beach and pools in my opinion.  They might have been a little quieter but that was not what we were looking for. I think they also got a few other discount perks for the spa and maybe a free beach bag in their room.  I would not spend the extra money on EC unless you are dead set on having an ocean view room.

The Spa

We did not do any treatments at the spa.  If you can't tell, we didn't do much other than hang out on the beach, stay up way too late, and drink too much.  We did hear others say the spa was great and maybe next time I will get a massage.  Every evening, a newsletter was dropped off at our room.  It detailed the next days events at the resort, which restaurants were open, and the daily spa special.  The spa was pretty pricey but our last full day, the special at the spa was affordable, and I am kinda kicking myself for not taking advantage of it.  Call and book your spa appointment early though.  I heard the slots book fast, especially for the special.

That's it for today.  I will have a part two to this post up as soon as I finish it though.  I hope this helps you decide whether Excellence is right for you!

*These are all my own opinions.  I am not getting paid or compensated in anyway to write this post.

Beach Swimwear

SWIM TOP: Asos | SWIM BOTTOMS: Asos (both on sale!) | SUNGLASSES: Target (similar and just ordered these) | BEACH BAG: Target (similar and this one is so cute)

I found this swimsuit at Asos before we left, and it is was my favorite on the trip.  I like a fun print, and the colorful bamboo leaves were perfect for a beach vacation!  It doesn't hurt that it was only $43 total too.

The first pictures were taken on our rooftop pool.  It was our favorite place to hang out before we had brunch and in the evening.  We had a perfect view of the sunset from our room, which made for a beautiful setting for us to hang out on the loungers for a little bit before getting ready for dinner.  We were definitely glad we spent the extra money on this room!

The "Crazy Coconut" I'm holding in the first pictures was one of my favorite treats!  They were very hard to come by and you actually had to order them the day before to get one.  Unfortunately they didn't just give them away.  We made friends with a bartender one night and he was sweet enough to pull some strings and get us on the list for one.  I took way too many pictures of our cutie coconuts which in turn killed my camera battery.  And how do you forget your camera charger on your honeymoon?  I don't know but I sure did.  That lead us to taking professional couples pictures at the resort though so I guess it wasn't that bad of a situation.  That is why I don't have many outfit pictures from our trip though.

I keep dreaming about going back!  These posts help my vacation blues a little though.  Are you taking a tropical vacation this summer?  I would love to hear about it!
